Enjoying petting?We often misread our dogs and assume they are enjoying our interaction when in reality sometimes they would prefer to move along. I always recommend people pet then pause when engaging with dogs. This allows them to choose to leave or stay. Here is a perfect video demonstrating this. I love the term “consent test”. I recommend all owners try this with their dogs and video tape and see if their dog really enjoys their interaction or not. This is very helpful when children want to pet or engage with dogs. I always recommend pet then pause. If the dog chooses to move along then say “thank you” and let them go.
